Shadowland

Produced in partnership with The Atlantic and Executive Producer Joe Berlinger, this six-hour series sends documentary teams across America to embed with subjects who have rejected mainstream narratives, including the real-time stories of a rural Pennsylvania cafe owner facing twenty years in prison for her role in the January 6th insurrection, an anti-vaccine activist pushing a dangerous fake “cure” for Covid-19, and a mother divorcing her husband because she fears his beliefs put their children’s lives in danger. Taking a neutral, observational approach, this deeply immersive project reveals why conspiracy thinking moved from the margins to the mainstream, why we’re drawn to conspiracism, and how politicians and media figures seek fame, money and power by spreading false narratives.

“Sobering and illuminating… [The] neutral approach taken by ‘Shadowland’ is best, leaving it up to the viewer to either side with the carnival sideshow characters and their mad tilting at windmills, or continue to place our belief in science, math and reality.”

— Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times

Shadowland is fascinating, revelatory journalism…brace yourselves for some difficult, potentially upsetting investigative journalism that poses an unblinking eye in front of a problem that kind of feels impossible to solve.”

— John Serba, Decider

“[An] insightful documentary on the conspiracy theories currently ravaging the American public…Shadowland offers a wealth of strong explanations.”

— Judy Berman, Time
